Santos III

::

I hope you don't mind that I go back and forth in time.
It's a bit like those films that move between past and future to explain the present, which is actually the past or the future or don't even have time at all.
I like things to be like that, without time. I find it interesting that movement of back and forth, because that's how my mind works sometimes, two steps back in order to give a step forward, two steps forward to finally realize that I walked too fast and that I really have to go back.

These photographs of the Santos (the celebration of Saint Anthony here in Lisbon) were the first I took with my first camera, I had since I was 8 years old and that I've talked about before in
here.

I don't know if it's because of the photographic film or because of the old age of the camera, but the pictures were quite saturated and grainy, which made me really glad.

2 homens e muitas agulhas

Arne & Carlos, the Norwegian/ Swedish designer duo blend traditional patterns with androids quite comical figures that remind me of the 80's and some knitting magazines that my mother had at home in those days.

I discovered their work yesterday through the site Ovelha Negra and I loved it! But... all that can recover tradition (and what seems to have been lost), joining techniques, resources and ideas of modern times, inspires and fascinates me .

"To Pillar who was not yet born and so much time took to come."

Tonight I left home with my couch blanket and I went to an outdoor cinema to watch this beautiful  film. The love story of José and Pilar is like all love stories, unique and absolutely fascinating. These are two Human Beings so strong, so full of love for each other, by each others lives that it was impossible not to bring of this film the enormous pleasure to have seen it.

Good to see that what I idealize comes true ... even if out of me.

Adoro o conceito deste blog.

::

I love the concept of this blog. I think that it's a wonderful idea that two friends may correspond from a virtual environment and that they share their friendship with the world in such a beautiful and aesthetically so similar way.

Always found it interesting how the routines of all of us - cooking, decorating the house, be with family and friends, sunbathing, work - can be so poetic when placed on a blog... it's as if they stop being routines. They earn interest, fascination. Become almost alive objects. I think that's good!

I don't believe that life can be boring, regardless of all the little things that we always repeat, because first exists a human inability to repeat something in the same way and then because, at least for me, the repetition has its charm :)

Throughout my all life I grew up hearing my father telling me phrases, quotations, that he liked and carried to his life... and to mine. Often these phrases have been like breathing seven times before taking a decision, other times just made me feel even more unquiet.

Today, the one that is stick in my head: "the road is made while walking."
And here I go, with anxiety, but also with great determination because it is only with faith in the road that you can get to a wonderful strange place.

Things that matter

On
June 22, 2011

This guy, Phillip Toledano, is so incredibly inspiring. I just love his work about his father. And I feel that... is so real you know?! I always liked old people and I also think that goodbyes can be a beautiful thing. Specially when one captures it in such an amazing and loving way.

"So we’re all in this world talking to ourselves and it’s naïve. But part of me feels as though it would be nice if art makes things better for people, for the world in some way, if it shows them something that is possible.

... saying goodbye can be a really extraordinary beautiful thing. We realize that we have to say goodbye to our parents at some point, but it can be a really beautiful experience if you look at it that way. And that, if you show it to other people, it’s giving people something useful in a way. And I guess I would hope that my work would be useful to people in some way, as well as to myself.

... if I can do art that changes people over time, shows them something for a second or a minute, changes their mind about something, that would be really worthwhile.

... I could just be f*cking talking to myself. I mean that’s the thing that you don’t know. Am I just bullshitting? Am I just drinking my own urine and telling myself it’s the finest red wine available? I have no idea. You know what I mean? You don’t know. You just hope that you make stuff that matters, firstly to yourself and secondly to other people."

... Eu poderia estar apenas a falar sozinho. Eu estou apenas a dizer disparates?

1994

On
June 22, 2011

Em 1994 fui a primeira vez a Londres. Tinha 12 anos.

::

In 1994 I went for the first time to London. I was 12 years old. And I took with me my first camera, which I had since I was 8 years old.

I found these pictures the other day and I was thinking that today I would never have been able to do some of these frames... being beautiful or ugly, they were made without fear. I think when we have less than 15 years old our aesthetic is much less affected or conditioned by what others say or think. I found it interesting! Perhaps because today I also feel that my mind is much more open and clean than it was a few years ago... those years when we're not sure of who we are or what we like.

It's a strange path and always incomplete, full of influences and prejudices. And constantly changing. This turns out to be the only truth.

Dancei.

::

I danced. I danced a lot. As if time and the world around me had stopped and as if I were the only thing in motion, surrounded by people who will not remember my face when the earth started turning.

Living is messy. It's dirty. Noisy.

I was stepped on, took over with beer, I boarded on a train with people I never met. Temporary friends with whom I do not need to exchange words. Gestures were enough.

I like to celebrate the Popular Saints (a popular party here in Portugal) because they remind me who I am. And among many other things, I'm a Portuguese from Lisbon that is captivated by dances and  manjericos (little basil plant) and passion fruit punches.

Mujô

On
June 16, 2011

{discurso via Murakami PT, via facebook da Ana}

::

Amazing illustration work of Simon Prades and Haruki Murakami's speech at the ceremony of Catalonia International Prize:

"In the Japanese language we have a word - "mujô" - which means that nothing is permanent, there is nothing that lasts forever. All things that exist in the world vanished, everything changes constantly. There's no eternal balance, nothing is immutable because you can not trust them forever.

...

We could say that this idea of "everything has an end" implies a certain resignation to the world, this means that there's nothing that man can do to oppose the course of nature. However, the Japanese had found a beautiful way to look at this resignation.

If you look closely at nature, for example, in the spring they admire the 'sakura', the fireflies in the summer, and in the autumn the yellow leaves from the woods. Day by day they watch everything with passion, every moment as a routine, almost as an axiom. When the time comes, the most famous places to see the flowers of 'sakura', or fireflies, or autumn leaves, get fill with people, and it becomes almost impossible to book a hotel.

Because the beauty of the 'sakura', fireflies, and the leaves of autumn, disappears after a while. The Japanese can travel many miles to see the splendor of the transience of these phenomena. But they don't limit themselves to just see this beauty, they also feel relief when they discover how the flowers 'sakura' and the dim light of the fireflies spread, or how the vivid colors of the trees go off . Indeed, they find peace when beauty has reached the climax, and starts to disappear...

...

As I said in the beginning, we live in a world of change and transition, marked by the concept of "mujô", which tells us that any lifestyle changes and eventually disappear. That man is powerless when facing the huge force of nature. Awareness of this transience is one of the basic ideas of Japanese culture. At the same time, and although we respect the things that have disappeared and we're aware that we live in a fragile world where everything can disappear at any moment, we Japanese also have a positive mindset that drives us to live joyfully.

...

I am very pleased to share with you the same story. The work of writers is to dream. But we still have a most important job: to share our dreams with others. It is impossible to be a writer without having that feeling of wanting to share what you write.

...

We should not be afraid to dream. We should not engage in the causes of disasters, which come with the name of "efficiency" and "convenience." We must be "unrealistic dreamer", advancing at a steady pace. Humans die and disappear. But humanity endures. It's something that continues indefinitely. Above all, one must believe in the power of humanity.

Meia-hora.

Agora, eu penso melhor, caminho melhor, sonho melhor...

Amar é punk

On
June 12, 2011

(...)
E usasse All Star.

RELACIONAMENTO A GENTE CONSTRÓI.

QUERO ALGUÉM QUE ME TRAGA FÔLEGO. Entenderam?

Ah, Cazuza! Ele sempre soube.

Paixão é para os fracos.
Mas amar - ah, o amor! –
AMAR É PUNK."

{Fernanda Mello, via facebook de Francis}

::

"Funny that when people stop believing in "love of life", a love to life appears in people's lives.

Without the glamor of the soul mate.
Without the promises of being forever.
No butterflies in the stomach.
No sleepless nights.

It's a simple thing like: you know the guy. You begin slowly to admire him. You begin to find him incredible.

I already passed the age of having a physical type of man to relate to. Before, only if it was strange (really strange). Who liked rock more than anything. Had at least one piercing (and a giant tattoo).
(...)
And wear All Star.

Nowadays I keep insisting on the items All Star and rock'n roll, but I confess that much has changed.

It is personal, there's no way. WE BUILD RELATIONSHIP  Day after day. Dosing patience, silence and long conversations.

Goodbye unrealistic expectations, goodbye adolescent dreams.

He will forget every month the date you start dating, but will always remember you like your bread really white (and with lots of cheese). He will not make statements and candlelight romantic dinners, but he'll know that you are of PMS in the first "Hi", sweetly forgiving any phrase you spoke more harshly.

Ah, guys, whatever. I found that I really like is that love. NO PASSION. After years of writing about that I want someone who takes off the floor beneath my feet, who steals my breath, I humbly come to rectify.

I WANT SOMEONE TO DIVIDE THE FLOOR WITH.
WANT SOMEONE TO BRING ME BREATH. Got it?
I want to sleep embraced without fear.
Want to wake up and see that (whatever happens), everything will be in it's place.
Without anxiety.
No roller coasters.

There is nothing more rebellious than loving just one person.

To love is to be rebellious. Is crossing the dark. It is, in my case, change the concept of everything that I ever thought it could be love. No. Before was passion. Before it was immaturity. Before it was a search for myself that had not happened yet.

I've talked a lot about love, I think that is the greatest theme of our lives. But love is not only poetry and refrains.
Love is RECONSTRUCTION.
It's rhythm. Breaks. Tune. And challenges.

It took me years to agree with my dear (and often quoted) Cazuza: "I want a quiet love, with fruit bite flavor."

Ah, Cazuza! He always knew.

Passion is for weaks.
But love - ah, love! -
LOVE IS PUNK. "
